St. Anne’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church Sunday School
In June 1958, 18 people and 2 priests, Rev. Sametz and Rev. Foty, initiated the idea of a Ukrainian Orthodox Church being built in Scarborough.
Five months later, the property was purchased and monthly services were being held at a home on the property. Rev. Zaparyniuk came out from Oshawa to conduct the services.
In June 1960, Rev. Tsukornyk started St. Anne’s Sunday school. As the congregation grew, so did the number of children attending Sunday school.
By 1964, the church was built, and in May, the first Mother’s Day concert was held. Over 30 children participated in this memorable event.
St. Anne’s Sunday school went through many changes. At times, only 2 classes per month were held. At another time, the large number and diverse ages of children necessitated 2 classes. A primary class with children under 8 years of age was conducted in the classroom, and a class of children ages 9 and up, was conducted in the hall.
We have had many excellent Sunday school teachers. Many teachers shared their talents with the children through music, dancing, arts, drama, and Easter pysanky and paska workshops.
St. Anne’s continues to offer Sunday school classes. We are all awaiting the directive from our Metropolitan Yurij to begin services in our Orthodox Churches in Canada. Until then, we ask that all parents continue to pray with their children.
